Indian initiatives on Lithium Ion mining- 5.9 Mn tonnes of Lithium Ion reserves in J&K

Recently the Union Ministry of Mines announced that 5.9 Mn tonnes of Lithium Ion reserves have been identified in Jammu and Kashmir, Salal-Haimana area of Reasi District in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium is a new and precious mineral in new age of India and can take us to the self-sufficiency of our requirements of Lithium Ion batteries for electrical vehicles as well as for other computer peripherals.

The Indian government has taken several initiatives to promote lithium-ion mining and exploration in the country. Some of these initiatives include:

1. The National Mineral Policy 2019: The Indian government launched the National Mineral Policy in 2019, which aims to promote the sustainable development of the mining sector in the country. The policy identifies lithium as a strategic mineral and encourages the exploration and development of lithium resources.
2. National Aluminium Company (NALCO) and Hindustan Copper: Both of these state-owned companies have initiated exploration activities for lithium in different parts of the country. NALCO has signed an MoU with the government of Odisha for setting up a lithium-ion battery plant, and Hindustan Copper is exploring the possibility of setting up a lithium-ion battery plant in collaboration with other companies.
3. The National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET): The government has launched the NMET to promote exploration and development of mineral resources in the country, including lithium. The NMET provides funds to the state governments, public sector companies, and private sector companies for mineral exploration activities.
4. The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme: The FAME scheme is a part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan, which aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. The scheme provides incentives to electric vehicle manufacturers and buyers, and also encourages the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
5. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme: The Indian government has announced a PLI scheme for the manufacture of advanced chemistry cell (ACC) batteries, which are used in electric vehicles and other applications. The scheme aims to attract investments in the manufacturing of ACC batteries and increase domestic production of lithium-ion batteries.

Overall, the Indian government is taking several initiatives to promote lithium-ion mining and exploration in the country, with the aim of reducing dependence on imports and promoting the domestic production of lithium-ion batteries.
