Solar energy to power AMC head office

Agra: To save power and promote use of green energy, Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) administration is planning to set up a high capacity solar plant at its head office on MG Road. The installation of the 325-kilowatt capacity plant is estimated to cost Rs 15 crore. The contract for the solar plant has been awarded to a private company.

With this move, AMC also hopes to cut down on its power bill which is around Rs 1 lakh per month. In addition, Rs 50,000 is spent on operating generators. The solar power besides cutting down on electricity bills will also provide relief from power cuts that affects official work.

Municipal commissioner Arun Prakash said, “We are planning to use solar power as the main source of electricity at the head office. For this. a 325-Kw solar power plant will be set up. Following tender process, a private company has been assigned the task for setting up the plant. The company will also look after the maintenance of the plant for 25 years.”

After installing the solar power plant at its head office, AMC administration plans to switch to green energy at the zone offices as well. The Hariparwat zone office is located in the AMC head office. It is proposed to set up solar power plants at the zonal offices in Chatta, Lohamandi and Tajganj in the second phase.

In Agra, the Dayalbagh Educational Institute (DEI) has already set an example of harnessing solar energy and saving power. The university has been successful in meeting a major part of its electricity demand on its own and also succeeded in distributing surplus energy to colonies in Dayalbagh.

On a daily basis, DEI produces up to 2,500 to 2,800 units of electricity. The varsity has a grid tie-up with Dakshinancha Vidyut Vitran Nigam (DVVNL) to whom it sells its surplus power.
