Solar power plant to light up Karnal jail
KARNAL: In a bid to ensuring uninterrupted power supply and conserving energy, a 695-KW solar power plant will be installed at the district jail.
In a bid to ensuring uninterrupted power supply and conserving energy, a 695-KW solar power plant will be installed at the district jail. The step is aimed at a lower electricity bill, which is between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 10 lakh per month.
“Solar energy is the future solution for meeting growing energy needs. The Prison Department has decided to turn jail premises across the state towards the use of solar energy,” said Sher Singh, Jail Superintendent.
“We have started work on installation of the solar power plant. It will be functional by the end of the month,” he said. “We will try our best to bring the electricity bill down to zero,” he said.
The step would reduce the jail’s dependence on the power grid and its electricity bill in an eco-friendly way. The money saved via this initiative would be used on other development works in the jail, he added.
The district jail, spread over 42 acres, has 34 barracks and more than 2,400 prisoners. It has a big kitchen, high-mast lights, a hospital, four tube wells and factories to manufacture soap, furniture, clothes and mats, using electricity.
Sources said before initiating this step, LED lights had been installed. The Jail Superintendent said with this plant turning operational, all lights, factories and high-mast lights would be run using solar energy.
