Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) is taking a decisive step toward decarbonizing its operations by exploring large-scale solar integration across its refinery township in Assam. To support this strategic objective, Firstgreen developed a highly granular Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR) designed to guide NRL through a systematic, township-wide solar rollout. This initiative moves beyond conventional estimation and establishes a precise, building-by-building roadmap for renewable adoption.
The feasibility study encompassed every residential block and service building within the township, assessing technical suitability and solar deployment potential at the most detailed level. The objective was not only to determine capacity but also to generate a practical and data-driven plan that would enable NRL to implement solar infrastructure efficiently and safely across diverse building typologies.
A key component of the study was a holistic technical assessment that included load curve analysis, structural evaluation, and shadow analysis to ensure optimal placement of solar modules. Transformer capacity assessments were undertaken to verify grid readiness, while system design layouts were optimized to avoid shading losses and ensure long-term performance reliability. Firstgreen also conducted CAPEX and OPEX modeling to provide an accurate financial outlook, including IRR and payback analysis aligned with industry benchmarks.
The resulting DFR equips NRL with a clear, actionable roadmap that balances technical rigor with financial feasibility. By outlining implementation phasing, investment requirements, and risk mitigation strategies, the report serves as a strategic tool for decision-making at both operational and management levels.
This initiative positions NRL to significantly reduce its carbon footprint while advancing the sustainability profile of its township. With a robust, site-specific feasibility plan, NRL is well-prepared to pursue a scalable solar transformation that supports India’s broader renewable energy goals and reinforces the refinery’s commitment to responsible energy management.
