AC cable and fuse for Rooftop Solar system

Published by firstgreen on

AC cables are needed to connect the inverters’ outputs with the grid or the off-grid electrical system.
On the AC side of a solar PV system, standard cables for electrical installations can be used. However, if the inverter is installed outdoors, it is important to use UV-resistant cables. Aluminium cables should be avoided because, in most countries, they must have a cross-section of at least 16 mm² for adequate stability, and this would not fit the inverter connection terminals.
On the AC side, usually fuses but also automatic circuit breakers can be used. However, the instructions in the inverter manufacturer’s installation manual must be considered. Furthermore, IEC 60364-7-712:2002 states that in some cases – for example, if there is no simple separation between the AC and DC sides of the inverter – residual current devices (RCDs) have to be installed.
