LITHIUM DISCOVERY IN INDIA

Published by firstgreen on

Our government has confirmed the discovery of lithium reserves estimated at roughly 1600 tons in Mandya District of Karnataka. Although small in global comparison, this find holds importance from the perspective of its enablement of local battery production. Currently India imports entire requirement of lithium which is a key input for the power-storage units that go into smartphones, laptops and electric vehicles(EVs).

This find may hopefully lead to further exploration so that a domestic lithium mining industry can be created to reduce import dependence especially since a big shift to EVs is part of the country’s agenda. Today, lithium ore is predominantly extracted in Australia.
