Clearing the Air: Creating Smoke-Free Environments for WELL Certification
“Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.” – Brooke Shields. This quote underscores the seriousness of smoking’s impact on our health and the need for smoke-free environments. In this article, we will explore the A02.1 and A02.2 WELL certification credits: Prohibiting Indoor and Outdoor Smoking.
The credits stress the importance of smoke-free environments, both indoor and outdoor, for the health and wellbeing of building occupants. Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, can significantly degrade air quality, leading to numerous health issues for both smokers and non-smokers. By prohibiting smoking in and around the building, we can ensure cleaner, healthier spaces for occupants.
For A02.1, the requirement is straightforward:
- Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes is prohibited in all interior spaces within the project boundary.
For A02.2, there are two options:
Option 1: No smoking signage Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes is prohibited in the following areas, and signage must be permanently mounted to clearly communicate the ban:
- Outdoors at ground level within 25 ft (or the maximum extent allowable by local codes) of all entrances, operable windows and building air intakes.
- On decks, patios, balconies, rooftops and other occupiable outdoor areas above ground level.
Option 2: No applicable outdoor spaces The project does not have the following spaces:
- Decks, patios, balconies, rooftops and other occupiable outdoor areas above ground level.
- Doors that open to the exterior.
