In a remarkable achievement in the field of the solar energy, Piyush Goyal, Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, has conferred two national-level awards to Chandigarh in a function held at Vigyan Bhawan on Tuesday .

Parimal Rai, UT Adviser to the Administrator-cum-Chairman, CREST, and Santosh Kumar, Director Science and Technology and Renewable Energy and CEO of CREST received the awards from the minister.

The city has been ranked first among the solar cities of the country in terms of solar power installation. Chandigarh has installed 7.7 MW solar energy, whereas second ranked Gandhinagar has installed 7.2 MW solar energy as on date.

In another category, the first position has been conferred on CREST among best performing SNAs( state nodal agency for renewable energy) among UTs and special category states.

Santosh Kumar said the awards were recognition of the sustained efforts the city was making for developing city as a model solar city. He said the awards were significant as the city came in the field much later.

He said Gandhinagar was perusing the solar programme since the past seven to eight years, whereas Chandigarh has been doing so for the last three to four years. The size of Chandigarh is small as compared to that of Gandhinagar.
