Delhi’s IGAI-First to run on Hydro & Solar Power

IGAI ( Indira Gandhi International Airport ) has become the first airport in India to run entirely on hydro and solar power after switching to renewable sources of its energy.

This step will help in the reduction of energy emissions of 2 Lakh Tonnes CO2 per year, resulting in a significant step toward achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission Aiport by 2030. Solar Power plants are on the airside and on the roofs of Cargo terminals of the IGI Airport. An approximate 6% of the airport’s electricity requirement is met from these power plants.

Delhi Airport has adopted renewable energy use from the hydropower plant for its demand of the remaining 94%, ending its dependency on non-renewable power.

This will result in the reduction of indirect energy emissions whopping 2 Lakh tonnes of CO2 every year. GMR Infrastructure Ltd (GIL)-led consortium to manage and operate the Delhi Airport, has signed a long-term PPA with a Himachal Pradesh-based hydropower producing company for the supply of hydroelectricity for the airport until 2036.

Along with that, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has a 7.84 MW solar power plant on the airside, as a part of stakeholder collaboration, operators of the cargo terminals at Delhi Airport have added another 5.3 MW rooftop solar plant. It has a set target of making Delhi Airport a Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport by 2030. TO achieve this, DIAL has adopted a green transportation program and achieved the milestone of the Green Energy Program for IGAI.

As a part of the Green Transportation Program,

1. DIAL has initiated the adoption of electric vehicle and phased out all diesel and petrol run in a phased manner. 1. DIAL has also adopted the initiative to become a “single-use plastic-free airport” and got certified by a third-party agency.
