KOLKATA: A feasibility report submitted by one of the consultants appointed by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority says that New Town is already fit to achieve a silver rating under the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Cities rating system and could also get gold or platinum status by following a few more steps like having 15% open green spaces, providing footpaths along all the roads, increasing contribution of renewable energy and others.

The IGBC Green Cities rating system is a voluntary and consensus based programme, which is a first of its kind in the country that addresses environmental sustainability in emerging cities. The NKDA authorities had earlier subjected New Town to its rating system to know how the township stands and what needs to be done to get its rating.

It has been opined by one of the consultants of NKDA that New Town is already fit to achieve a Silver Rating under the IGBC Programme and that the authorities just has to register and apply in the prescribed manner to IGBC to get the recognition. The report has come up with some suggestions for New Town to go a step forward to get gold or platinum rating standards.
