BBMB sets up two solar plants to boost power grid

CHANDIGARH: The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has set up two solar power plants at its sub-stations in Jalandhar and Jamalpur that would supplement the power grid in the region.

Though primarily hydro-electricity generators, the BBMB has forayed into solar power plants as part of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s initiatives into exploiting alternative sources of energy.

The minimum annual generation expected from these two solar power plants is 2.56 lakh units. The plant in Jalandhar has a total capacity of 100 kWp, while the one at Jamalpur has a capacity of 60 kWp.

Inaugurating these plants, DK Sharma, Chairman, BBMB, highlighted the benefits of harnessing the renewable energy. He said besides setting up more rooftop solar plants on the BBMB premises, installation of ground-mounted solar plants and a floating plant at Nangal had also been taken in hand.

Last year, the BBMB had installed grid connected rooftop photovoltaic plants on its office buildings located in Chandigarh, having an aggregate installed capacity of 175 kWp.

Work on installing a 80 kWp solar rooftop plant on the control room building of the BBMB substation in Delhi and a 20 kWp rooftop plant on the control room building of the BBMB substation at Narela is under progress and is likely to be complete by the end of next month.
